The Sexy Brutale really was completely great.

Is this going to show on every page? Jesus.

I've heard good things about the sexy brutale and am considering it for switch.

I'm playing Mario + Rabbids for switch. The Rabbids are the worst part of the game...but the gameplay is really fucking good. It's a tactical game with an extremely fun movement system, and every skill/ability is built in a way to work well with other stuff. There's just so much to experiment and learn with.

Example: A type of enemy that, when damaged, will run toward the person who damaged it. It can't run far, but if it reaches you, will hit you for half your health (if not more). They have a good amount of HP as well. So you position your players around the map in a way that you can lure it in different directions but stay out of it's reach. In addition to your standard attack, there are abilities that will automatically fire upon an enemy when it starts moving. So you ready that ability with one person and shoot the enemy with another. The enemy starts to move. The "shoot what moves" ability then activates, damaging it some more, and it will reverse its course. You end up kind of baiting the enemy around, trying to stay out of its range while chipping away at its health.

At times, it feels a bit like chess, as you're evaluating the enemies positions and trying to plan ahead several moves before beginning to execute that plan. It's a lot of fun, and the variety of enemies/environments keeps things feeling fresh throughout.

The rabbids are really not funny tho.

Only really been playing Breath of the Wild - took a big break from it, so I'll probably keep playing through it now until I 'beat' it. Finally ordered all my PC parts to build a PC, so maybe now I'll dip my toes into PC gaming...

A rant about The Long Dark.

It's OK overall, at least in the story campaign. It's probably the best survival game for people who don't care for survival games all that much. It understands that providing a few goals for the player isn't "handholding," that a human can construct better worlds than an RNG, and that permadeath isn't always absolutely necessary.

I like that it tries to tell a story, but I think the writing is...not so good. It's one of those deals where virtually all mystery is generated by making every character (even the PC) simply choose not to tell the player what's going on. The first NPC you find in the game calls herself Gray Mother instead of a first person pronoun, which is maybe kinda acceptable if you're writing a toyetic '80s cartoon. She makes you spend days searching for food and gathering firewood for her before she'll really talk to you, and at the end of it she reveals that she intends to just sit there and die anyway. They make it all out to be some kind of test, but the game already required you to find food and fuel just to survive to that point, so it's not important to the character, story, or gameplay in any way I could see. She continues to give you the runaround for at least another day or five while a missing plane crash survivor may be bleeding out, then we're supposed to feel sad for her I GUESS.

It's also one of those games that give you immediate third-degree burns when you walk too close to a small campfire for a half a second, make a gallon of lamp oil last 20 minutes, have a magnifying glass degrade and break from letting natural light pass through it a few times, etc. If you stumble into a small campfire while you're wet from the snow and wearing ski gloves, boots, two pairs of socks, two long johns, two work pants, two sweaters, two parkas, a balaclava, a toque, and ear warmers, the only thing that's going to get hurt is the fire. There are plenty of other dangers to choose from if you need one to be there, but you don't because I put that fire there. That shit is way more tolerable without permadeath, but it's still all so fucking contrived. I discovered it even has a hidden sanity meter. Sitting inside while doing the necessary shit-ton of inventory management wasn't bad enough so it has to give you cabin fever, too. Now I need to go stand around outside in a blizzard because that somehow makes me more sane.

I'm very dumb. I was thinking of "night in the woods" the entire time I was reading this. Watching the trailers for both, they look like they couldn't be more different.

Never played night in the woods

Almost finished with Mario Rabbids. It stays great throughout. I didn't fail all that often but I thought the challenge was appropriate- I was carefully considering my moves and getting rewarded for doing so

Next up on switch... Not sure. I got a $10 eshop card and oxenfree is currently $5, but I actually got it for free with xbone. It's not usually my kind of game but I've heard it's really good. There's some other games comin out soon tho- Furi looks sweet, Celeste looks incredible...and enter the gungeon is supposed to be awesome, and that's out

I think Furi's one of those games where I like everything about it except playing it. It's really interesting and clever, with cool art and great music, and it's hard but fair. It's really good. Fast-paced action just tends to give me stress headaches these days, and that's not Furi's fault. I feel horrendously old now.

i finally started Halo 4, it's actually pretty good if you skip the cutscenes

update:
beat Halo 4, it stayed good until the end when it became hilariously bad, climaxing with a QTE: 'Press RT to fire machine gun'
dead
dead
dead
so i looked it up, and you need to hit LT to plant a grenade, thought it was a meta joke, but turns out it's just a bug. then you get rewarded with a 'sexy cortana' romance scene >_<

Update: Main story of Celeste beaten.

This game could've easily just been a tight, challenging platformer, and I would've loved it.

But the story, music, and art elevate it to another level. It's a special game and I highly recommend everyone check it out. The issues it deals with in the story are so relatable.

If you think this game is run of the mill you're sorely mistaken

currently the 3rd best rated switch game on metacritic
http://www.metacritic.com/game/switch/celeste

It's not just pixel art, it's incredibly detailed pixel art. The background interacts with your character's motion, sending lanterns swaying. Flags blow in the breeze, your hair flows as you move about. The environments bright, varied. The level of care is evident everywhere.

It's the best indie game I've played in years.

Dunkey did a good job reviewing it (Spoiler warning: A little spoilery from 2:05 through the end, if you care about that stuff)

will play if it gets to game pass, no way i could skip on a game named after the best bottom tier frozen pizza

i lost the url for this board a month ago, and in the time since beat Tales of Berseria, Crypt of the Necrodancer, & Shantae: The Pirate Curse. Berseria had a ton of quality of life improvements over other Tales games: Skit markers, new npc dialog markers, quest markers, story advancement markers, equipment showed the status for all characters that could equip it (instead of just the character you were equiping), excellent fast-travel, and more, i was very impressed.

i also started Nier (the first one) & Bayonetta, Nier is probably the first game i've ever played where i was blown away with the music. gotta pour one out for Pyce when i beat it

i absolutely loved it (except the menus felt a little too mobile gamey to me). the bosses were the perfect casual difficulty for me, just hard enough to take a few tries to no-damage defeat most of them. loved the simple silly story and jokes

i was all hyped after playing it for 1/2 Genie Hero, but they seem to have cranked the DLC to maximum overdrive

The DLC is all alternate playthrough styles, its not necessary. If you liked ps1/GBA/ds castlevanias, i'd compare them to richter mode (risky mode) and Julius mode (Friends to the end.)

they're all rebalanced main quests to suit different playstyles.

a month ago i learned Pinball FX3 Portrait Mode was an Nintendo Switch console exclusive, so i went through the hassle of installing Windows & Steam and taking pictures of my monitor for a Portrait unlock code (to prove i wasn't running an illegal pinball arcade....), all of this only to find out that my video card didn't support the required level of DirectX : |

*also my xbone return was a flawless victory, i got a full refund, got to keep the xbone, & traded it in to amazon for $120

i've been giving 3rd & 4th chances to games i gave up on, mostly classics that everyone raves are great:
Nights into Dreams, Silent Hill 2 & 3, Metal Gear Solid 2 & 3, DMC 1 & 3, Batman: AC

also, pretty excited about the new Hyperkin Gameboy coming out later this year, it looks pretty great from what they've shown so far
